Our cedar outdoor furniture will not bow or sag over time, unlike plastic or resin outdoor furniture, and you will never come out to your backyard and see your chairs blown clear across the lawn. The natural preservatives that are found in cedar wood will protect the wood from the elements and will keep your cedar furniture strong and reliable for many years. Finishing Tips

All Natural:
Western red cedar has a richly-textured grain and a beautiful array of warm colors, ranging from light amber to deep honey-brown. Many people prefer to let their cedar furniture weather naturally; it does not need any secondary protection to keep its structure throughout the years. Over time the colorful tones that the furniture has will slowly mellow out to an attractive silver-gray color. Also, the grain of the wood will become slightly raised. If the furniture is left completely natural the silver-gray color will be punctuated by darker streaks that form from the reaction between the zinc hardware and the cedar resin.

Wood Sealer:
If you prefer to keep the dark streaks from forming we would recommend you use a simple wood sealer. We suggest using Thompson Wood Sealer to block the pores of the wood. This will prevent the darker streaks and keep the grain from rising, while still allowing the wood to mellow out to its silver-gray color.

Wood Stain:
If you want to preserve the colors of your fresh cedar furniture we would recommend quality penetrating sealers and transparent or solid exterior stains. These are available in a variety of colors so it shouldn’t be hard to match your existing décor. We suggest using a single coat of a semi-transparent stain with UV inhibitors, such as Sikkens Cetol 1 (natural) to preserve the color of your cedar furniture.

Paint:
Paint will work on cedar furniture, but there will be eventual splintering and peeling, like on any other exterior surface. That is why wood stain is a good choice, because it is “breathable” and won’t trap moisture, which is the cause of blistering and peeling.

Wood Oil:
It is not recommended to use wood oil on your cedar outdoor furniture.
